A view on the Grand Canal in Venice, the scene depicts San Marco with the Punta della Dogana in the distance. Visiting Venice for the first time after the commission by a collector it was a somewhat daunting challenge to paint a subject painted a thousand times before! I kept in mind someone’s comment about ‘Its not what you paint its how you paint it!’ Upon arrival in Venice there was completely flat light and then a spectacular thunderstorm passed with the associated light, this inspired my painting.
