Elena in a breeze

£145.00£225.00

Elena is one of the most spectacular yachts afloat, the story is rather special too! Originally built in 1910 she won the coveted Transatlantic race in 1928. American yacht designer Herreshoff  at his peak designed the fastest boats on the water including defenders of the  Americas Cup yachts. Scottish Professional yachtsman Charlie Barr from Gourock skippered several of these large racing yachts during his career in that era and became a legend in the yachting world. Elena eventually was broken up for scrap in 1954 becoming another relic of ‘The Great Days of Yachting’

The story wasn’t over though,  during the resurgence of interest in Classic yachts in the 1990s talented yachting professionals were running some beautifully restored classics. like his famous predecessor of that other era ‘canny’ Scott Steve McLaren had the dream and skills to take on such a massive recreation, all the more impressive as the project had to be started from nothing, so Finance, design from original drawings and rebuild were all achieved when she was launched again in 2009 in Galicia , Spain. Now based in San Remo , Italy she is seen at most of the Med and Caribbean regattas and is a sight to behold when reaching off with 1800m of canvass up.

In this scene she is heading on the final reaching leg of the Regattes Royalles in a silvery  bay of Cannes in a breeze.
